Diary notes, 1536-1572.

The manuscript is mainly a political diary kept by persons close to one of the leading families of 16th century Florence. The first text (7 pages) records the entry of the Emperor Charles V in Florence on April 28, 1536. It describes the route followed by the imperial retinue accompanied by the Duke Alessandro de' Medici and his suite from the gate at S. Pietro Gattolini to the Palazzo Medici. Architectural and sculptural decorations honoring the guest are enumerated without explanation of their significance. The costumes of the Florentine nobles are better described, while "his Majesty was simply covered in black velvet." More details are given about the rich decorations of the Palazzo Medici, where the Emperor was hosted by his son-in-law, the Duke. The last page speaks about the departure of the Emperor one week later, when he attended mass at S. Lorenzo, concluding: "And I, Giovanb[attis]ta di Gherardo Incontri of Volterra, at that time cameriere of the Mons. del Monti's nephews, I poured water on his [Majesty's] hands during that Mass."
